The science of stiff joints

Poor joint health can severely affect our quality of life. Can anything be done?

Joints are the places in our bodies where bones meet.  We have big joints like the ones in our hips, shoulders and knees and we have small joints like the ones in our hands and feet.

Joints allow our body parts to move which is why keeping them healthy is so important.

Joints are made up of cartilage, tendons, ligaments and synovial fluid, which lubricates joints and prevents friction from occurring.  As we age, or if injury occurs, these tissues can become worn and damaged and the discomfort that results can start to impact on our day to day activities.

Our joints use specific nutrients to stay mobile and maintain the health of their specialised tissues.  Omega-3 essential fatty acids are known to be beneficial for joint health while antioxidants are important to prevent free-radical damage which occurs as a normal part of joint function. Red krill oil provides joints all the benefits of bioavailable Omega-3’s as well as powerful antioxidant protection with Astaxanthin.

Our joints use the Omega-3 essential fatty acids from red krill oil to support healthy blood flow to joints. Omega-3’s also allow the body to make chemicals that support a balanced inflammatory response which helps manage those telltale twinges of joint wear and tear.  Astaxanthin occurs naturally in red krill oil and gives it it’s red colour.  Astaxanthin is a potent free radical scavenger, neutralising these damaging particles to support the health of the joint.  And astanxanthin’s antioxidant action has another benefit for red krill oil – it acts as a natural preservative and helps to keep the oil fresh.

Not all Omega-3 fatty acids are created equal and some may not be as easily absorbed by the body as others.  The omega-3’s in fish oil are not as readily absorbed by our digestive cells and must first be packaged into special structures called micelles. But the Omega-3’s in red krill oil are already contained in a micelle-like molecule, meaning they are more bio-available. Red krill oil such as Nature’s Way Red Krill Oil is a great alternative to fish oil and provides nutrients essential for healthy joint function and to support ongoing comfort and mobility.
